When Ellis Island officially opened on January 1, 1892, the first passenger registered through the immigration station was Annie Moore. The young Irish teenager and her two brothers, Anthony and Philip, had departed from Cork, Ireland on December 20, 1891 aboard the S.S. Nevada. Travelling in steerage, the trio spent 12 days at sea and arrived in New York on Thursday, December 31. The next morning, New Year’s Day, they were processed through Ellis Island. All three children were reunited with their parents, Matthew and Julia Moore, who were already living in New York.
Annie Moore married Joseph Augustus Schayer, the son of German immigrants, with whom she had at least eleven children. She died of heart failure on December 6, 1924.

It is Dan. Jeanne Rynhart sculpted both of them. We aren’t related as our surnames (by marriage) are spelled differently but we both live in the same county, she’s in West Cork and I’m in East Cork. We’ve never even met. I recently discovered that my Dad has a golf trophy she was commissioned to do. I’ve been asked quite a few times over the last three decades if I’m the artist of that name and that was long before I published any books. It would be lovely if some day she is asked if she is the writer. I’d be so chuffed.

It would make my day and bring a big smile to my face, seeing as I’ve been mistaken for her so many times to date. Maybe I should have looked her up when we camped in West Cork this summer and asked her the question myself. 😉
