This week’s Thursday Doors photos were taken by one of our daughters while on a recent visit to her brother in Bristol in the UK. I asked her to look out for some interesting doors that I could feature on my blog, and seeing as she’s an art student, it was the street art that caught her eye. Thank you for your contribution this week, Megan.
Of course, you can’t photograph street art in Bristol and leave him out. Born there in 1974, Banksy was involved in the wave of street art that took the city by storm in the ’80s. Over the years, his work has appeared in London, Los Angeles and New York, as well as in his home town of Bristol. More recently, he’s been busy in France. Whatever your views are on street art, Banksy’s pieces make a statement and get a reaction. Have you seen this one?
It depicts Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, as a traveling migrant. (Jobs was the biological son of a Syrian migrant to the US). Banksy painted this one in the ‘Calais Jungle’, a nickname for the encampment in the French port were migrants lived while attempting to enter the UK. Talk about a picture painting a thousand words!
If you would like to know more about Banksy and Bristol, take a look at Visit Bristol. That’s where I came across the video tour and where you’ll find lots of links to all sorts of interesting places and things to do there, if you’re planning a visit.
There are lots more Thursday Doors to see over on Norm’s blog. Click the blue link at the bottom of his post to view them and you can even add your own.
So now you have your minions out door hunting for you eh? I call that cultivating the next generation of door aficionados – awesome!
Some great finds in this collection and of course any post that has some Banksy in it is going t get my attention. I think the whole street art trend we see today can be traced back to what Banksy started.
Since the 80’s? Wow, I guess I’m older than I thought 🙂

Even her brother and his fiancee were looking out for doors. Banksy may have had a part in the beginnings of street art but in forty years time they might be looking back at the Thursday Doors trend and pointing to you as it’s founder, lol.

Brilliant post. The image of the lion is (I believe) from one of my favourite children’s books. I’m also a big fan of Banksy and Bristol street art. Thanks to you and your daughter for sharing.

My kid’s loved that story of The Lion and the Mouse from Aesop’s Fables, too.

Thanks Jean (Megan) for a tour of some interesting and very creative doors. I didn’t know about Banksy, although I’ve seen some of thee images before. Thanks for filling in a large blank in my art space. I enjoyed the video, too.

On my last trip we didn’t get time to do much site seeing, so it was great to get those photos. My next trip to Bristol will be for my son’s wedding, and that’s going to be in a castle. The other guests will think I’m mad, taking so many shots of doors instead of the wedding party, lol.

I absolutely love street art! I want to go to Bristol just to see some Banksy.
I would love to “borrow” the lion photo, as I am a Leo. Let me know if that would be ok, please.

Please thank your daughter. I love good street art, and these are all wonderful. I really had to look twice at Steve Jobs because that one is amazing. I remember using an Apple SE both at work and at home. Thanks for the smile. 🙂

I didn’t know about that Steve Jobs Banksy until I researched the post. I think he painted it in 2015.

I only knew about Banksy in the last couple of years or so, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen – his works are incredible in the messages they convey.
I think it’s great that your daughter helped scout out some doors for you this week! Excellent teamwork 😀

I’ve told her she should contribute more often, she has a good eye for it, 🙂

Clearly I must read more about Steve Jobs. Of course I know his Apple legacy, but I know very little of his personal story.
Hope to see more from Megan! Thank her for me, please.

I’ll pass that on to her, thank you Maggie. I don’t know much about Steve Jobs either, I didn’t even see the movie based on him. I must have a look at that one.

How great you’ve got your daughter doing doorscursions too! She curated a great selection of art and doors for you this week.
I’ve only seen one Banksy and photographed it while in San Francisco. It’s called Peaceful Hearts Doctor. I photographed it in 2011; it was under plexiglass, but I’ve read vandals somehow got black paint under that and ruined parts of the Doctor. Why would anyone do that?
I really liked the Lion. He’s a cool character.

I’ve seen photos of that Banksy in San Francisco. Vandals don’t care about art, Deborah. Such a pity that they managed to get by the plexiglass. Yes, that lion looks like a real cool dude, 🙂

Megan did a fantastic job! If you’d posted nothing but the first door, I still would have loved it. 🙂

Our daughter Megan is an art student, too, or rather, a former art student, having graduated last spring. I enjoyed all the these, but the lion is my favorite. I’m going to take a look at the video later.

So this is your daughter’s view of Doors:) Does the Lion represent the English crown?
Did not know Job’s heritage.

If it wasn’t for the little mouse on his tail, I would say that lion might represent the crown but I’m pretty sure this image is from Aesop’s fable, The Lion and the Mouse.

Ah -you are probably right about the fable. By the way, let me know after you send me an email with your info, that you sent it, so I don’t miss it:)

What Norm said ☺ It’s funny how we get our family and friends in on the search.
Your daughter has a great eye for catching the creative. I really like the brick wall with the different coloured bricks.

I lived in Bristol for a while, and never saw a Banksy. Loved Bristol, it’s a great city, and I’m not usually a fan of cities. 😊

I like Banksy’s work but never knew he was from Bristol until Megan took the photos. She really liked the city, too, and our son seems to have settled well there.

Is your son at uni there?

No, Ali, he lives there with his fiancee, who is from Bristol. They’re getting married in December, so I think I’ll be seeing a lot more of the city in the future. 🙂

Oooh a wedding in the family, lovely! Well at least Bristol is easy to get to now with its own airport. I lived just off the Whiteladies road when I was there, and worked at the Habitat store in Clifton which is closed down now, it is a lovely part of the city. I loved it there. You will enjoy your visits, I’m sure. 😊
