Athlone, county Westmeath, is the featured town in my Thursday Doors post this week, although, this lovely thatched cottage isn’t in the town itself. I know you can’t see the entrance in the photograph but trust me, there is a door there, hidden by the foliage. I had to shoot this one from the car as we didn’t have time to stop.
We parked close to this lovely flower shop. I really like the name as I haven’t come across that one before. It can be quite challenging to think up catchy, original names for businesses like this. The side of this premises was worth capturing too – even if it is a fake door.
Crossing the bridge over the Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, we headed towards the east and a very ancient part of Athlone.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit the castle but it’s only about an hour’s drive away, so we will definitely get back to it. I’m saving it for a series of Thursday Doors posts on nearby castles and historic buildings that I’m planning for 2019.
Now that you’ve seen one of the main attractions of Athlone, let me introduce you to another one – Sean’s Bar.
It’s situated in a neat and colourful street, very close to the castle.
Sean’s Bar isn’t just the oldest pub in Ireland but may very well be the oldest pub in the world.
Athlone, marks the site of what was once a great ford across the Shannon known as the Ford of Great Antiquity. At around 900 AD there lived a man called Luain Mac Luighdeach – Luain son of Lewy. It is known that he established an Inn close to “Ath Mor – The Great Ford”. This Inn is today known as Sean’s Bar!..Luain acted as a guide to travellers who had to venture across the rapid torrent of the Shannon. A settlement grew up around the crossing point and in time the place came to be known by his name. ” Athlone – Ath Luain, the Ford of Luain. Later King Turlough O’ Connor built the first wooden castle here in 1129 to protect this settlement.
Sean’s Bar has been researched thoroughly by the Guinness Book of Records and proudly holds the record for “The Oldest Pub in Ireland” with an official dating of 900AD. Research is ongoing into the title of “The Oldest Pub in the World”; so far, nothing older has been found. *
You can read more about the history of Athlone and Sean’s Bar here.
As always, thanks a million for stopping by and if you’d like to visit some interesting doors from all over the world, you’ll find a link to them on Norm’s blog.
What a lovely name, ” a room in bloom”.

The oldest pub in the world (if they haven’t found anything older yet, I’m calling it in their favor). It’s worth a trip just to have a pint there. I look forward to the castle post, but this was fun.

That is a very clever name for a floral shop. I didn’t realize the Shannon was so wide.

The Shannon is even wider in other places, Jan.

Almost forgot what a hassle it is when the internet connection is weak! Links go haywire and everything takes ten times as long (exaggerated, but patience is not my strength). Thanks for the warning, I put a new link in:) Jean, how come you are too busy to not stop for a door? (just kidding) I can see the bottom of the door though on the left.
For the past full week we have had rain. but for the last 2 days it has become much colder. Am typing with my fingerless mitts on – yep in California. Hubs is now in Southern California for the second part of a job in 70 degr. weather! Before he left, he taught me to put on the wood stove to keep a fire going, so I’m not freezing:)

My goodness, Jesh, fingerless gloves in California? I’m so thankful for our stove so I know how you’re feeling about yours. I also know how frustrating a weak internet can be but ours has improved lately. We don’t have a router we just use mobile data from our phones for now. Stay warm.

Just spent a few weeks in southern Cal. wearing shorts on my walks, so my body is protesting:) With internet, the mountains make all the difference, and elevation of course.
Whenever the internet speeds back up, I’ll read the links you provided in your last Thurs. post. Have a great weekend!

Being the oldest Pub in Ireland is certainly a great claim to fame. I love the whole row of colourful buildings around it too. Nicely done Jean.
And now I know we have a castle post to look forward to in 2019, yay!

At least three castle posts, Norm 😊

Love the doors, but mostly smiled with happy memories when I saw the long range shots of the colorful buildings. Sean’s looks like a must stop so I looked up their website to get a little more info. Great one. 🙂

Have you been to Athlone, Judy? It’s a very historical town.

I don’t believe we stopped there, but I sure smiled looking at the familiar architecture and color schemes. Your posts always bring back wonderful memories.

I’m glad they do. Yes indeed, many towns in Ireland have brightly painted facades on the older properties. I’m tempted to do the same with ours, lol.

Shawn’s bar is like you say colorful (does that you remind of Spain?) Thursday I mentioned that I was typing with my fingerless mitts on – now I know why – Sat. morning I woke up to snow – shock – it hasn’t come this early in the year since I’ve lived here!

Stay warm. We just have rain for now but it’s supposed to be a very cold winter ahead.

Oh NO! Hope not, but in case,am prepared with warm clothes (that I wore may be once or twice year in southern California, and my boots were just a fashion item!) and now I’m getting experience of making a fire – from scratch – not a gas one that many do here – hope for snow though, if it must be cold:)

It is just so pretty there. Have I mentioned I can’t wait to see it? Gray skies and colorful buildings, very nice for me.
I love the curved parking along the castle, the faux doors, the Room in Bloom, and of course, Sean’s bar. Who doesn’t love an old pub?
Thank you for sharing your gems!
